About This Place

Nestled at 941 Bourbon Street in the heart of New Orleans' legendary French Quarter, Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar stands as one of the most iconic and storied bars in the United States. Steeped in history and brimful of vibrant character, this bar offers more than just drinks — it’s a genuine journey back in time wrapped in an electric, energetic atmosphere.

Stepping inside Lafitte’s, visitors are immediately captivated by its unique, rustic charm blended with the mystique of New Orleans’ rich cultural tapestry. The dimly lit, intimate setting coupled with live music — often transforming into a lively piano bar — creates a dynamic space where locals and visitors alike come together to sing along, unwind, and celebrate. One regular, Dana Mordecai, describes the piano area as simply irresistible, capturing the essence of the bar’s inviting vibe.

The bar’s drink selection is a highlight of the experience, showcasing a tempting lineup of classic and signature cocktails that pay homage to New Orleans traditions with a twist. The famous Purple Voodoo Daiquiri (affectionately known as the “purple drank”) is a must-try, praised by guests like F C for its bold, potent flavor that’s perfectly balanced and far from overly sweet. Lafitte’s rendition invites adventurous palates to savor something truly unique to the city’s spirited drinking culture.

Other standouts include the Original Hurricane and the Sazerac, each delivering layers of complexity and allure that seasoned cocktail lovers will appreciate. For those seeking something with an energetic punch, inventive drinks like The Spy, The Diplomat, and The Hero offer a delightful blend of spirits mixed with vibrant infusions of Red Bull Orange Edition, adding a contemporary edge to this historic establishment’s offerings.

While the bar thrives on its lively crowds and bustling energy—sometimes even crowded enough to require earplugs—this speaks volumes about its enduring popularity and reputation as a must-visit spot. Patrons like Shoshana Abrebaya note the vibrant atmosphere, albeit advising that larger groups may find it a bit of a trek through the French Quarter. Meanwhile, M. Rowen’s reflections on the famed Bloody Marys show how the offerings have evolved over time, maintaining that signature punch and memorable spice during leisurely afternoons.

Service at Lafitte’s can be a mixed bag, with some guests mentioning less personable bartenders, but this does little to diminish the overall experience for many who return time and again to soak in the lively ambiance and historic surroundings.

Ultimately, Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop Bar is more than just a place to grab a drink; it’s a quintessential New Orleans experience that invites you to revel in history, music, and expertly crafted cocktails. Whether you're seeking a spirited night out or a memorable spot to toast to the city’s colorful heritage, Lafitte’s delivers an authentic, one-of-a-kind atmosphere that keeps you coming back for more.

Lafitte's was one of the recommended bars for our group during our visit to New Orleans. It's almost at the end of the street when walking in the French Quarter, so it was a little far to walk, given our big group. It was a nicely themed bar, and the live music was nice. I did have to put earplugs in. It was also VERY crowded, even on a random Saturday night. I didn't order any food or drinks, probably because of the large crowd.

We always have to make a stop in LaFitte’s when we go to NOLA - I love the look and feel of the whole bar, but I especially love the piano area. I’m a sucker for a good piano singalong! I did have to knock off a couple of stars for service - there were three, male bartenders there (that we saw) on our most recent visit, and none of them were very personable. My husband went to get me a drink, and the one he went to seemed to be put off by having to serve a customer. I went back later and two others were standing together behind the bar (no line waiting when I walked up) and they were not helpful either. We decided to move along at that point. I’m sure we’ll go back on our next visit, I always like to go for the piano side - I was just a bit surprised by the service this time. Not a deal breaker - hopefully just something that can be improved on.

Try the purple drank at one of the oldest bars in the USA! Go back in time at this spot. Good music. Sometimes it turns into a piano bar.

Lafitte’s Blacksmith Bar is one of the coolest spots in New Orleans and definitely worth a visit. I first came here years ago and spent the afternoon day drinking with some of the best Bloody Marys I’d ever had, peppery, spicy, and unforgettable. On this trip, I went back hoping to relive that experience. While the mix seems to have changed a bit and wasn’t quite as good as I remembered, it was still very solid. What really makes this place stand out, though, is the vibe. The history, the atmosphere, and the character of the bar are unlike anywhere else in the area. Even if you just stop in for a drink, it’s an experience that feels uniquely New Orleans.

We saw the voodoo daiquiri (purple drank) in an article of must tries so when we were visiting we decided to give them a try. It didn't disappoint, we aren't big drinkers so they were strong tasting but they were well worth it. We also tried their hurricanes as we were told they were better than the originals. They were good! Not as sweet as the others.

Known for being the oldest bar in American History. The place is certainly rustic. The service was quick, however the Hurricane wasn't great at all. The live music was great. The atmosphere gave mysterious as the space is dimly lit.

Very cool super old bar with live piano entertainment, feels cosy and intimate with the dim lights! Loved the voodoo daiquiri (purple drink). A must visit on the quieter part of Bourbon Street.
